Kill Your Television!

I am have become very anti television lately. Although my daughter is a television-aholic (it is on in her room only), my son virtually watches non. If he does it is one show on the weekend but NONE on the weekdays. Sometimes we can go weeks without it being on at all.

Too much television can be detrimental:

Research has shown that children who consistently spend more than 4 hours per day watching TV are more likely to be overweight.

Kids who view violent events, such as a kidnapping or murder, are also more likely to believe that the world is scary and that something bad will happen to them.

Research also indicates that TV consistently reinforces gender-role and racial stereotypes.

A couple ideas to lessened the amount of tv watching your children do.

**Try a weekday ban. Schoolwork, sports activities, and job responsibilities make it tough to find extra family time during the week. Record weekday shows or save TV time for weekends, and you'll have more family togetherness time to spend on meals, games, physical activity, and reading during the week.

*Keep TVs out of kids' bedrooms.

*Turn off the TV during meals.

*Don't allow your child to watch TV while doing homework.

*Set a good example. Limit your own TV viewing.

OK, folks I am off my soap box, now, what are your views on the subject?

If you can give me a good alternative for keeping the thing off, you will win a small something.

We stopped our cable, which means that we only get the local PBS station with out rabbit ears. I love it! I went to my parent's house in October and watched the news for the first time in months. I could not believe how awful and depressing it was.

The boys do not miss watching a lot of TV. They would rather play with their toys and read their books any way.

I will turn off my TV if I can come to YOUR house for dinner. That recipe looks amazing.
As a teacher, I am on both sides of the fence. I definitely think it is important to limit how much, and what my child watches. But at the same time...that last hospital stay would have been much more traumatic without Finding Nemo...and Cars!:)

Ohhhhhh.....I love T.V. The trashier the better. Reality shows...my favorite. Satellite t.v. with 300 chanels....amen!!!

As a law enforcement officer who does nothing all day but read and write about the bad things people do to each other, t.v. provides a great escape. There is nothing better after a hard day of fighting crime and taking care of twins than settling down to "Big Brother" or "Bret Michaels, Rock of Love." The new season of "Paradise Hotel" starts on Febuary 4th. Yahoo!!!!

That being said, my kids (who have acess to t.v. anytime they want) and do have t.v.s in their rooms....don't watch all that much. Why don't they? Because they are extremely involved in extra cirricular activities such as sports and scouts. Also, they would rather play outside riding bikes or scootering. And, when they do have the t.v. on, they aren't really paying attention because they are too engrossed in what ever art or play activity they are doing. T.V. has become boring to them.

I know several kids without access to t.v.s who love comming to my house because they know they can watch it. They are obsessed with it once it's on. They don't even want to play because the t.v. is on. Seriously, limiting access only makes them want it more.

I think it's important to make sure your kids are well rounded and involved in activities they enjoy. I am a huge believer in organized sports. What a great way to teach them to follow directions, work as a team towards a common goal, and establish friendships that may last a lifetime. Believe me, get your kids involved and you wont have to worry about too much t.v. They wont be interested.
